Requirements

Orange County Emergency Services has openings for Paramedics. These positions respond to emergency and non-emergency calls received by the Orange County Emergency Services Department. Provide initial medical assessment and treatment to individuals, including advanced life support procedures. Ensure emergency medical care is provided in accordance with established guidelines, written and verbal instructions from the Medical Director and Emergency Services management.

Accountability, honesty, and trustworthiness.
North Carolina, National Registry, or other State Paramedic Certification with the ability to obtain North Carolina Paramedic Certification through State Office of EMS reciprocity process and able to obtain local credentialing requirements within the first six months of employment.
The selected candidate must be available to work rotating shifts.

Team Oriented Work Environment

The OCES EMS Division is a countywide E-911 EMS Response Agency that provides emergency medical services County border to border over 11,000 times annually. EMS transports over 8000 patients to surrounding hospitals annually. The EMS Division provides service 24-hours/365 days and is governed by Orange County Local Government. Orange County is 400 square miles and is populated by 140,000 residents. Orange County is home to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill whose student population adds over 30,000 residents to Orange County annually.

The EMS Division is staffed by 40 Paramedics, 24 EMTs, 4 Field Training Officers, 8 EMS Supervisors, 1 EMS Training Coordinator, 1 QA/QI Coordinator, 1 Deputy Operations Manager; all operating under the direction of the EMS Operations Manager.

EXAMPLES OF PARAMEDIC DUTIES:
Effectively manages the scene of emergency and non-emergency calls by: assessing the medical care needed, determining the need and method of transportation to a medical care facility, administering medication as necessary, and ensuring a seamless transfer to hospital staff for continued care.

Transport individuals to and from doctor offices, nursing homes, hospitals, clinics and private homes.

Ensure the proper functioning of the emergency medical vehicle, all emergency medical equipment, and adequate supply of inventory are on the vehicle.

Provide outreach education at schools and in the community and provide emergency medical service at community events.

Complete a variety of departmental reports.
Typical Qualifications:
Successful candidate characteristics include but are not limited to:

Knowledge of basic and advanced emergency medical and life-sustaining techniques, including cardiac care, trauma and shock care, and ventilation and other CPR techniques.
Knowledge of the principles of anatomy and physiology.
Knowledge of basic algebra, pharmacology, and chemistry for the administration of drug modalities.
Knowledge of equipment and supplies employed in the emergency care of patients and victims of accidents.
Knowledge of infection control and OSHA guidelines.
Knowledge of radio communications equipment.
Knowledge of the street and road system and physical layout of the County.
Ability to deal with stress, death and dying patients.
Skill in the administration of emergency medical techniques and in the use of specialized equipment associated with advanced life support.
Ability to maintain a collaborative relationship with Medical Direction Staff, Fire Department Personnel, Volunteer Rescue Squad, and EMS providers with Orange County Emergency Services.
Ability to utilize multiple software resources and EMS Equipment.
Ability to prepare thorough electronic and written reports
Minimum Qualifications
Requires minimum education of a high school diploma and one year of emergency medical or related experience. Two or three years' experience at paramedic level preferred.

Possession of North Carolina certification as an Emergency Medical Technician at the Paramedic level; or possession of NREMT Paramedic with ability to obtain North Carolina credential.

Orange County Emergency Services EMS Division requires all applicants for this position to hold the following required certifications: AHA CPR, ACLS, PALS, ITLS/PHTLS, ICS 700 AND ICS 800.

Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
