ABOUT THE POSITION



The City of Redwood City is seeking Lateral Firefighters, who under the direction of the Fire Captain, will perform firefighting and fire prevention duties aimed at protecting life and property, operate and maintain firefighting apparatus and equipment, and provide basic medical assistance. In addition, as a Firefighter, incumbents will provide Basic Life Support first responder pre-hospital emergency medical care and emergency medical assistance, perform minor station maintenance, and participate in a wide variety of training to maintain skills.



This job announcement is intended for current Firefighters. Lateral applicants are those applicants who possess at least two years of current full-time firefighting service, plus certifications as indicated in the ?Minimum Qualifications? section of this announcement.



Essential duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Drive and operate fire apparatus; respond to fires; rescue individuals that are trapped or injured; provide medical aid; operate specialized manual and powered tools, hose, ladders and other safety equipment under hazardous conditions; maintain all tools and equipment; use and wear scene appropriate full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus equipment; participate in a variety of fire/emergency related drills and training; participate in fire prevention inspections, education, pre-fire planning and public relations; assist in fire investigations; participate in a physical fitness program; appear in court as necessary; maintain station and grounds; maintain fire hydrants; perform a variety of administrative duties as assigned and perform work with a record of regular attendance and punctuality. As an EMT, essential duties include; responding to medical emergency calls; evaluating condition of patient and monitoring vital signs; administering medical care in accordance with medical orders; interviewing patients and witnesses and observing evidence at the scene. Duties also include maintaining medical equipment and supplies, and training other City personnel in emergency first aid techniques as required.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.

EXPERIENCE

Two years of current full-time firefighting service.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND CERTIFICATES

Certificate of completion from a Fire Academy that meets the California State Fire Training curriculum for ?Firefighter I?.
A valid Emergency Medical Technician certificate or Advanced Life Support Paramedic license.
A valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
LICENSE

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid driver?s license.

Knowledge of:

Modern principles, practices and procedures to mitigate emergencies including; fires, hazardous materials, medical and rescue; equipment and procedures required to safely accomplish them; the safe and effective use of vehicles, equipment, tools, devices, facilities.

Current medical principles, practices and procedures related to emergency patient treatment and/or advanced life support; medical terminology; basic arithmetic; techniques and processes used in the description and assessment of patient status; categories, applications, procedures and equipment used in monitoring vital signs; symptoms of impaired cardiac and respiratory functioning, altered states of consciousness, various types of toxicity, poisoning, shock and common diseases and applicable laws, codes and ordinances relating to emergency medical care.

Ability to:

Act in accordance with departmental policies, rules, and instructions in the field of firefighting; apply principles practices and procedures of modern firefighting; safely operate fire apparatus, equipment, tools, devices, facilities and use properly; perform tasks relating to firefighting, medical aid and other calls for assistance; maintain the EMT Certification as required by the State of California; act appropriately in emergency situations; understand and follow oral and written directions promptly and accurately; analyze fire and emergency situations and adopt effective courses of actions; operate and maintain voice radio equipment, and a computer terminal or personal computer; drive and operate fire apparatus and motor vehicles proficiently and safely; establish, maintain and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment

This position is subject to an eighteen (18) month probationary period.
As a condition of employment, employee shall comply with mandated medical monitoring.
Must be eighteen years of age; eyesight: 20-30 corrected with contact lenses or spectacles, successful long term soft contact lens wearers (i.e., six months without a problem) are not subject to the uncorrected criteria of 30-100 uncorrected; freedom from color blindness; normal hearing.
Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, crawl, twist, climb, lift and carry 100 lbs.; pull and/or drag 175 lbs.; Work in the following environments: cold, extreme heat, extreme noise, outdoors, confined spaces, elevated areas; Work with electrical hazards, vibration, chemicals, dust, toxic waste, mechanical hazards, and explosive materials; Availability for shift work on-call and stand-by.
For Lateral Firefighter, incumbent must have possession of and the ability to maintain a valid State of California EMT Certification/License. Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
