The Community:
The Templeton Community Services District is located halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco in Northern San Luis Obispo County, Templeton (pop. 8,000). Templeton is recognized for its open space, temperate climate, friendly lifestyle, a local farmer?s market, and award-winning wineries. Our old-town neighborhoods blend well with new homes to create an excellent residential atmosphere, served by a school district with all sites accredited as ?California Distinguished Schools?. The Templeton High School is also recognized as a ?National Blue-Ribbon School?. There are three area parks and numerous churches in the community. Templeton?s small-town atmosphere belies its big town amenities including Twin Cities Community Hospital ? the community?s largest employer and only in-patient facility in the North County. There is also a Trader Joe?s shopping center, award winning restaurants, and a variety of service clubs and activities.
Templeton?s close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, Lake Nacimiento and the Salinas River provides ample opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to indulge in a myriad of water sports, camping or fishing, while avid bicyclists can be seen trekking through the rural countryside. All of these attributes coupled with the Town?s truly community-supported events including: Concerts in the Park, Templeton Wine Festival, Fourth of July Celebration, Templeton Beer Festival, Founder?s Day, Oktoberfest and many more makes Templeton a truly exceptional place to live, work, and recreate.
Fire and Emergency Services:
Templeton Fire and Emergency Services has been providing services for more than 125 years to the community, dating back to the first Templeton Hose Company. Throughout much of the 20th century, the Department was all volunteer, and like many small-town fire departments, has been in a state of transition for many years, becoming more dependent on career staff. In August 2019, Templeton voters approved Measure A, a parcel tax expected to generate $486,000 annually for Fire and Emergency Services staffing, allowing Templeton Fire and Emergency Services to move to 24/7 staffed coverage. The Department is now transitioning from one full-time Captain to 3 full-time Fire Captains and a full-time Fire Chief. By the end of the year staffing will increase to one full-time captain on 48/96 shift, with one reserve firefighter on 24 hours shifts to provide 24/7 coverage. This consists of a 6-day cycle where each team works one 48-hour shift followed by 4 consecutive days (96 hours) off duty.
The full-time Engineer?s anticipated work schedule is Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. ? 6 p.m. The Engineer may also cover shifts for one of the Captains due to illness, vacation, training or other unanticipated needs, as needed, or at the direction of the Fire Chief. Fire Captains work a 48/96 schedule. Occasional after-hours call-backs are expected.
The Position:
Under direction of the Fire Chief/Fire Captain/s, drives all types of fire apparatus in response to emergency incidents; operates and maintains all fire apparatus equipment in a safe and appropriate manner, the complement of tools contained on the apparatus and general equipment; performs specialized firefighting work involving driving, fighting fires and assisting in the protection of life, property, and the environment; participates in fire prevention work and performs other related duties as required or assigned. This is currently a 40-hour week position. The successful candidate may fill in as the Officer in Charge (OIC) in the absence of a Captain on a 48/96 schedule. Templeton Fire and Emergency Services is a division of the Templeton Community Services District (TCSD) and has one fire station that serves a community of 8,000 residents
