THE POSITION
You must be currently employed as a full-time Firefighter or current placement on the California Professional Firefighters (CPF) rehire list to qualify for this position. Please review "Qualifications - Lateral Entry" within this job announcement.

PERS retired annuitants or individuals currently receiving CalPERS Retirement Benefits are not eligible to apply.

DEFINITION:

To protect life and property by combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires and to perform emergency medical assistance.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Firefighter is a journey-level classification. It reports to the respective company officer in the fire Suppression Division and/or to the Fire Captain in the Emergency Medical Services Division. During medical emergencies, the Firefighter may report to a Fire/Paramedic Captain for medical/clinical issues. Incumbents are expected to perform the full range of duties of a Firefighter. The classification is distinguished from Fire Recruit in that the latter is a training classification used during the Sacramento Fire Department Fire Academy.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

General supervision is provided by fire company officers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Respond to fire with a fire company, enter burning buildings with hose lines, operate nozzles, and extinguish the fire as directed.
Operate hand fire extinguishers, fog nozzles, and similar equipment in extinguishing fires; raise, lower, and climb ladders; and ventilate burning buildings to carry off smoke and gases.
Respond to emergency medical calls and provide basic life support for ill and injured persons; may provide advanced life support for critically ill and injured persons.
Render emergency care in accordance with the provisions of Sacramento County EMS policies and procedures.
Rescue persons from danger and administer medical aid as necessary.
Perform salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, evacuating water, removing debris, and performing general clean-up at the fire scene.
Perform routine housekeeping duties at a fire station, such as mowing grass, making beds, cleaning walls, washing windows, and sweeping floors.
Perform limited repair and maintenance work on fire equipment and apparatus.
Attend in-service training sessions to learn firefighting strategies and tactics, equipment operation, medical aid, and street and hydrant locations.
Perform business inspections.
Conduct public education programs.
Promote fire safety and burn prevention among public contacts.
Operate ambulances.
Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:
Modern principles and practices of fire suppression, hazardous materials mitigation, fire suppression, and emergency medical services.
Functions, characteristics, and proper use and maintenance of medical and firefighting equipment and supplies.
Current laws and regulations pertaining to fire prevention and safety.
City geography.
Fire hazards.
Firefighting and medical resources.
Ability to:
Understand and learn firefighting and emergency medical information from oral and written sources.

Education and Experience:

Fire Recruit Entry

Education:
Successful completion of the Sacramento Fire Department sponsored Fire Academy as a City of Sacramento Fire Recruit as outlined in the Fire Recruit classification specification and Civil Service Board Rules and Regulations 3.5(c)(4)(ii).; and a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

OR

Lateral Entry

Experience:
Current employment as a full-time Firefighter or current placement on the California Professional Firefighters (CPF) rehire list; and must have successfully completed probation in current or past fire department; and have two years of continuous experience as a paid full-time career Firefighter; and


Education:
Possession of a valid California or National Registry EMT certificate; or possession of a valid California or National Registry Paramedic License; and possession of a California State Fire Marshal Firefighter 1 certificate; and must be able to successfully complete the Sacramento Fire Department sponsored Lateral Fire Academy; and a high school diploma or G.E.D equivalent.

PROOF OF CERTIFICATION

Proof of the required certificate(s) and/or license should be submitted with your application and will be required at the time of appointment. Unofficial documents and/or copies are acceptable.


SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Age:
Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.

Driver License:
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License at the time of appointment. Loss of the driver license is cause for discipline. This requirement may be reviewed on a case-by-case basis for individuals with disabilities.

Medical Examination / Drug Test:
If considered for appointment, candidates must pass a medical examination and a drug test.

Background:
If considered for appointment, candidates must pass a background investigation, which may include a criminal history check for job-related convictions, fingerprinting, polygraph test, psychology exam and drug use history.

Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Certificate:
Possession of a valid CPAT Certificate at time of appointment; in addition, the certificate must have been issued within 12 months from the start date of the Sacramento Fire Department Fire Academy.

Physical Performance:
Incumbents hired after June 30, 1990, shall be required, as a condition of continued employment, to participate in an annual physical performance assessment or participate in the Fitness in the Firehouse Program. Refusal to participate shall subject the incumbent to disciplinary action, up to and including termination.

Residency Requirement:
Employees in this classification must reside within thirty-five (35) air miles from the freeway interchange at W-X Streets, 29th - 30th Streets within one year following appointment.

Respiratory Protective Equipment:
Work in this classification requires wearing respiratory protective equipment at times. When assigned to such work, facial hair must be shaven when it interferes with the safe fitting of respiratory protective equipment.

Probationary Period:
Employees must complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.

3. Emergency Medical Services Skills Test: (Pass/Fail) Qualified candidates will be notified via email of the EMS Skills Test date, time, and location one to two weeks prior to the test. The EMS Skills Test is administered by the Sacramento Fire Department. The EMS skills test will consist of psychomotor skills exercises for medical and trauma using National Registry and the American Heart Association`s Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support guidelines; and will not include county-specific protocols. Candidates must obtain a minimum passing score of 70% or higher to participate in the Interview Process.

4. Interview Process: (100%) Those determined to be the most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in an interview process

5. Background Process & Medical Exam/Drug Test: If considered for appointment, candidates must complete and pass a background investigation, which includes but is not limited to, personal history, work history, reference checks, Live Scan/fingerprinting, and psychological test. Candidates must also pass a pre-employment medical exam, controlled substance, and alcohol test.
